Arming the United States during the Civil War was a complex task, generally and logistically, with many players: inventors, manufacturers, the United States government, ordnance officers, inspectors, and soldiers that used them. The manufacturing and arms industries were forever impacted by the demands of the Civil War. Advancements in manufacturing and carbine technology mutually inspired innovation in the other’s industry that allowed them to arm troops faster even with the rising government demand. The carbine is one example of how the Union was armed through technological innovation and individuals’ genius and agency.
